Sue Bennett College

Sue and Belle Bennett

Sue Bennett dedicated most of her life to charity and assisting the impoverished in her area.  Sue and her younger sister Isabel "Belle" Bennett had a dream of providing educational opportunity to people in London/Laurel County. The dream bore fruit when the women of the Methodist Parsonage Society provided $20,000 that was matched by $20,000 from the London/Laurel County community to begin a school in London.  The Sue Bennett Memorial School was opened in 1897, after Sue Bennett died, by her sister Belle.  For over 100 years the dream was nurtured by Sue Bennett Memorial School offering elementary and secondary courses and then in 1922 when it became a junior college and was renamed Sue Bennett College.  It gained accreditation in 1932 and became a four year  institution in 1994.  Throughout it's history,  Sue Bennett College was devoted to giving low income students of London and the surrounding area the opportunity to attend college and stay close to home.

Although the college closed it's doors in 1997, the dream of providing for the community is still alive and well through the current "keeper of the dream."

In  1998, Union College, Red Bird Missionary Conference and the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church began a three-way partnership to restore life to the Sue Bennett College campus.  Through extensive research and creative thinking, these groups envisioned a way to re-use these facilities as a multi-tenant human services agency.
